Opening the TiNLD

Transport in Newhaven & Lewes District started as a idea following COVID as a support for locals post Lockdown. It has become a useful one stop shop for advice, discussions, ideas and of course, guidance. The group called simply Transport in Newhaven and wearing my 'TiN' hat, the ethos became clear - provide updates, gather and look at suggestions, discuss ideas and give expert opinion on transport matters - Bus, Train and Ferry. An online only presence throughout the early years, the number of Facebook group members has grown to well over 4000 members.

In March 2025, Transport in Newhaven officially expanded to include Lewes, Ringmer, Plumpton and Isfield becoming what we are today - Transport in Newhaven & Lewes District (or TiNLD for short). In April 2025, TiNLD joined forces with Newhaven Business Voice for a joint meeting to address the traffic issues, for which we agree is an emergency. Since then, a committee has been established and quarterly meetings are held in Lewes with bus companies, council and transport users.

The website is a recent addition and although is links to Facebook group to aid navigation to content, we are expanding the website all the time.

We are many things - a community group, lobbyists and campaigners for better, more attractive and accessible public transport. Whilst helping make the choice and supporting the switch to more sustainable forms of transport and active travel more generally.

Who is Nash Travelman?

Allow me to introduce myself - My name is Nash, I'm 39 years old live in Newhaven, East Sussex. A husband, father of three and provide care for a relative. I grew up Sutton, South London and eventually moved to Newhaven in 2018. Although it may seem like nominate determinism, 'Nash' is my known as name. 'Travelman' is, what you could call, my stage name. A family member once changed it on a social media profile as a joke and it just stuck! I have autism which I attribute to my interest (verging on obsession) with transport - the Sunflower lanyard helps!

As a full-time care giver, both this and my other project at Brighton Buswatch are volunteer jobs, for which I have the title of 'Lead' and 'Chair' respectively. This is a happy and ever evolving experience, an extension of my interest in Transport. As a child, I loved Thomas the Tank Engine (and Tugs too) and spent a lot of time in my own world of transport, even at school. My grandfather worked on the railway too. Ideas like buses that spoke to you, tram routes, a bus around our new development flowed with enthusiasm; once even writing to London Transport to ask for a school bus to my school. I'd spend my days off in London, travelling the network, buses, trains, underground, DLR, boats and a frequent visitor to Heathow to watch the planes. I am a 'Travel Enthusiast'!

Over the years, I have led a couple of very small fry transport related projects in London and Hastings. Nothing earthshattering but fun nonetheless. The want to help make buses and by extension trains and boats, a far more accessible and attractive means of transport for everyone. TiNLD needs to feed into that with more voices and support from locals here and in Peacehaven, Lewes and Seaford. There is a worry about the future, the climate emergency and want to do my bit for my children, grandchildren and humanity more generally in a peaceful manner.
